We know that a lot of our guests like to go out on walks during their stay at West Acre, especially those with dogs. Wistow and the surrounding area offer a number of delightful scenic walks with a variety of distances. Here’s a guide to some of the best walks within 10 miles of West Acre.
- The lordship walk
A map of the walks around Wistow can be found at West Acre but one of our favourites is the Lordship Walk. This walk can be started right from the front door of West Acre and will take you on a scenic route around the farmland around the village of Wistow. The walk is around 6 Km in total length. On your way back to West Acre you will pass the black swan for a well deserved refreshment break.
- Bishop Wood
Bishop Wood is a large woodland area offering a network of walking trails just a 5 minute drive from West Acre. There is free parking and the paths meander through the forest, providing a lovely setting for a walk. It’s a great place for the kids and dogs to run off steam or for adults to blow the cobwebs away.
- Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve
Skipwith Common is a beautiful nature reserve around 20 minutes away, offering a variety of walking trails through heathland, woodland, and wetland habitats. The reserve is rich in wildlife, and you might spot deer, birds, and a variety of plant species. The well-marked trails are suitable for all levels of walkers, making it a great spot for a family outing. If you fancy a bite to eat or drink afterwards then check out The Drovers Arms, a lovely dog friendly pub and restaurant.
- Barlow Common Nature Reserve
There is a mosaic of habitats to explore on this former rubbish tip, which is now a flourishing wildlife rich brownfield site. Tranquil lakes host little grebe, and the open grasslands provide a real chance of seeing and hearing a green woodpecker. Early summer brings the meadow areas alive with common spotted orchids and viper’s bugloss. It is perfect for a family day out.
- Brayton Barf
Brayton Barf is a small hill that offers a relatively short but rewarding walk which is only about 10 minutes from West Acre. There is a car park at the front of the Barf although this can get quite busy at peak times. The top of the hill boasts some impressive views of the countryside and the climb is gentle and suitable for most fitness levels. On your way home why not stop of in at Harts coffee house for some refreshments; the cake we provide upon arrival is from Harts.
